BBC Janala, managed by the BBC World Service Trust, was a groundbreaking initiative aimed at making English learning affordable and accessible throughout Bangladesh using mobile technology. Developed in partnership with Systems Solutions & Development Technologies Limited (SSD-TECH), the platform integrated Interactive Voice Response (IVR), SMS, and WAP services to deliver audio lessons, quizzes, competitions, and downloadable learning materials for users of all proficiency levels. Launched in 2009, BBC Janala quickly gained traction, attracting 1 million unique subscribers within just six months. The service featured a variety of interactive components, including on-demand content, user-generated competitions, TV voting, and real-time feedback mechanisms.
Its success earned international recognition, including prestigious awards such as the GSMA Award for Best Product, Initiative, or Service for Underserved Segments and the Microsoft Education Award at the 2010 Tech Awards in Silicon Valley. Beyond accolades, BBC Janala significantly increased access to quality education for millions of Bangladeshis, particularly in underserved areas.
The project’s success also paved the way for SSD-TECH’s future ventures, such as the USAID-funded Mobiles for Health project, highlighting its impact on the evolution of mobile learning in developing countries.
